Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel Clinic
We had just a wonderful clinic with Felicitas.  With 28 rides over the three days we were able to see all levels of horses and riders.  About a dozen auditors each day were up front and personal with Felicitas and the riders.  Felicitas encouraged questions and discussion as well as careful to take the time to help everyone understand the exercises and principles in each lesson.  It was also a treat to watch Felicitas ride several horses.

Felicitas emphasized the flow of energy from the hind funneled through the rider to the bridle and back again.  She was diligent with all the riders that you can not control the horse from the hand and repeatedly coached each rider on not riding the mouth but riding the hind-end and the shoulder.  Her sympathetic concern for the horse came through in how she tailored each lesson to the horse and rider.  And she was very patient with the riders who struggled to let go of the mouth and continued to encourage them through a variety of exercises.

The neck must be long and reaching for the bit in order for the horse to effectively be through from back to front.  Her goal is to patiently encourage the horse to stretch into a soft hand, lift his back and carry his own neck as if 'peering over the edge of a cliff.

In the beginning Felicitas was less concerned as to if the horse was round but rather helping riders understand to focus on the shoulders and straightness.  She utilized many exercises to help the riders move the shoulders and create correct bend in order to improve the flow and connection.  For many of the riders it felt uncomfortable at first but then the improvement in the flow and cadence of their horses made it understandable.

We are working to bring Felicitas back early in 2010.

Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel

Hosted by Stoney Meadow Farms, Bonner Springs KS

August 13 – 16, 2009

Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel is the dressage trainer at First Choice Farm in Woodbine, Maryland. In 2004, she won the BLM Championships at Fourth Level on Roulette, a 1996 Oldenburg. In 2006, they won the BLM finals at PSG and Reserve Champion at Intermediare I. Felicitas currently shows Roulette at Grand Prix -- they debuted in April 2007 with a score of 70%.  This combination has been well-placed in Olympic Qualifying competitions as well as World Cup Qualifier competitions.  Much more is expected from Roulette and Felicitas in the coming years.

She is an effective and articulate clinician, whose style is sympathetic to the horse.  Her strength lies in “making the horse more beautiful, and allowing them to express themselves.” She is sympathetic to the horse and each is trained according to his individual needs and temperament following classical dressage principles. Felicitas patiently encourages the horse to stretch into a soft hand, lift his back and carry his own neck “as if peering over the edge of a cliff”.  She bases her work on classical methods as exemplified by the best of the European tradition. Typically participants and auditors alike benefit immensely from the creative and subtle strategies Felicitas shares with them. All leave with a better understanding of how to enhance the flow of their horse's energy from back to front, and front to back again.   The skills of Felicitas as a clinician will soon be available on-line from “dressageclinic.com.”

Along with Gerhard Politz, Michael Poulin, Debbie Bowman and Steffen Peters, she has been a USDF Examiner for the Instructor’s Certification program.  In her native country of Germany, Felicitas placed first in class when completing her "Reitlehrer" (federally certified instructor) certification. She also graduated with the highest score ever awarded since the program was upgraded by the German government in 1982.

In addition to her training and clinic activities Felicitas maintains a vigorous working student program.  Prominent competitors such as Teresa Butta and Brendan Curtis (from the Robert Dover TV reality show) in addition to Marjorie Davis have been trained through this program.

Felicitas was also the featured article in DRESSAGE TODAY: FEBRUARY 2007 with How to Develop Power with Hill Work - improving collection and self-carriage by venturing outdoors and Dressage Today: February 2008 with From shoulder-in to pirouettes - the benefits of hillside exercises.

This 4 day clinic is a unique opportunity to work with Felicitas in this extended clinic format but we also welcome riders for less days.
